Brian Kane is the Executive Director of the MBTA Advisory Board, a Massachusetts quasi-state agency representing the 178 cities and towns comprising the MBTA service district. In this role, he provides municipal oversight of the MBTA’s capital, operating, and policy decisions on behalf of local governments.
Kane’s career spans more than two decades in public service, transportation policy, and operations. He first joined the MBTA Advisory Board as a Budget and Policy Analyst from 2008 to 2012 before moving to the MBTA, where he held several senior leadership roles. These included Operating Budget Manager, where he oversaw the Authority’s $1.6 billion operating budget, Director of Performance Management, Director of Process Reengineering, Director of Operations Analysis, and Deputy Chief of Staff. He was a member of the MBTA’s Operations Executive Management Team and advised four General Managers. Kane also served as the principal staff member to the Fiscal and Management Control Board at its creation in 2015 and founded key initiatives including the MBTA Storm Desk and contracted shuttle bus services supporting major service disruptions.
In 2018, Kane returned to the MBTA Advisory Board as Deputy Director. He was appointed Acting Executive Director in 2020 and became Executive Director in 2021. He also briefly served as Director of Transportation at the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, where he launched the Lovejoy Wharf–Fan Pier commuter ferry and led major shuttle operations.
In 2024, Kane was appointed as one of 31 members of the Governor’s Transportation Funding Task Force, charged with developing short- and long-term solutions to Massachusetts’ transportation financing challenges.
At the local level, Kane serves as Chair of the Brookline Transportation Board, where he oversees policy areas including traffic safety, transit, parking, and multimodal planning. He is also a former elected Town Meeting Member in Brookline, and represents Brookline on the Massport Community Advisory Council.
Kane holds a Master of Public Administration from Northeastern University and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Boston College. He is a recipient of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Performance Management.
